Accreditation Delayed for Topeka Zoo   Date: March 3, 2010
A national group has delayed accreditation for the troubled Topeka Zoo for at least a year. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums today (WED) said zoo officials must deliver a progress report in six months. After that, the association will conduct an inspection and decide in one year whether to reinstate the zoo's accreditation. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that during the group's meeting in Virginia Beach, Virginia today (WED), four Topeka and zoo officials argued that the zoo should be reaccredited. They pointed out several recent changes in personnel and management philosophy. Two federal inspections in recent months have criticized the zoo's veterinary care and record keeping after several animals died.
